How To Grow And Take Care Of Peace Lily

Think about the peace lily as a symbol of prosperity, peace, and purity. Peace lilies are very popular indoor plants. They are known for the beauty of their green leaves and pretty flowers. The contrast of white flowers against dark green leaves will easily captivate your mind.

Peace lily is a medium indirect light plant. An interesting fact is that you can easily grow them in water. Peace lilies grow well in both water and soil. It can be said that growing a peace lily in water is a viable option. However, it is good to know that this is not a true lily. Peace lily is an easy-to-care-for plant, but there are still some rules you must follow to care for this beautiful plant. These are:

Now, I am narrating these rules based on my own experience.

Care with Soil

Soil is the first important element for plants because it contains many nutrients that are very beneficial for growth. Peace lilies can grow in all types of soil, but the soil must be well-drained, lightly moist, and neutral. You can use some potting mix that contains minerals and helps your plant with drainage.

Care with Water

Water is one of the fundamental elements for plants. Since your peace lily prefers lightly moist soil, you should water it sparingly. You can water your plant every 3 to 4 days. You can also check the soil—when it feels dry, then water the plant.

Peace lilies are not only soil-based plants but can also grow in water. You can grow your plant in water without soil—just remember to change the water every 1 to 2 weeks and keep it clean. However, remember that peace lilies grow better in soil than in water.

Care with Light

Every plant produces food from sunlight. Some need more light, and some need less. Peace lily is a medium-light but indirect-light plant. For this reason, you can easily place them indoors. So, make sure that sunlight comes in indirectly, then place your plant there.

Put in the Right Place

Where you place your plants depends on how much light they need. Since peace lily is an indirect medium-light plant, you can place it in the corner of your living room or office. Basically, you can keep it where it doesn’t receive direct sunlight. Bright and direct sunlight can scorch the leaves of your peace lily. So, you should place your lovely peace lily in the right spot.

Give Them Fertilizer

Fertilizer is another form of food for plants. Fertilizers help your plant grow quickly, stay healthy, and flower.

First, you should know that not all seasons are good for fertilizing. Winter is the resting period for plants, so it’s not good to use fertilizer then. The growing seasons—summer and spring—are best for fertilizing.

If you want higher foliage growth, use a fertilizer with more nitrogen. Since peace lily is a flowering plant, you can use a fertilizer with more phosphorus.

Remove Pests

It is very normal for your plants to be attacked by pests and insects. To remove pests, you can use fertilizer, Savlon water spray on the leaves, or place a clove of garlic in the soil.

Prune Your Peace Lily

Pruning is very important for your plant. It helps the plant grow quickly and stay healthy.
To prune your plant, you can use your hands or scissors. First, remove the yellow leaves. You can also cut the large stems to match the others and improve appearance.

Propagation

Peace lily propagation is very easy. First, choose a healthy stem from your plant. Then take a pot filled with water. Cut the stem and place it in the pot. Leave it for a few days and wait for roots to appear. Once you see the roots, plant it in soil wherever you’d like to keep it.

Problems with Peace Lily

You may face some problems while taking care of your peace lily. Here are a few problems and their solutions:

Yellow Leaves

When your plant’s leaves turn yellow excessively, it’s not a normal condition. It’s caused by overwatering and over-fertilizing. So, stop overwatering and over-fertilizing to solve this issue.

Flowering Problem

Non-flowering is a major issue. If your plant isn’t blooming, change its location to a spot with indirect bright light for a few hours each day. This will help it flower. However, make sure the plant does not get direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves

Dusty Leaves

The beauty of peace lilies lies mainly in their green leaves. So, try to keep them clean at all times. You can spray water on the leaves, or clean them with a soft cloth or tissue. You can also use clean oil to make the leaves look more beautiful

These are the tips for caring for your peace lily and solving its problems. I have shared them based on my own experience. Hopefully, if you follow these tips, you can easily take care of your plant and enjoy its beauty.
